This pilot chart review examined whether mild and moderate anemia were associated with greater healthcare use among patients discharged from Lincoln Medical Center between January 1 and June 21, 2022. Of 2,488 patients reviewed, 661 were excluded for factors such as severe anemia, active cancer, primary blood disorders, very low hemoglobin, or short hospital stays. Patients were grouped as non-anemic (Hb 12–16 g/dL), mild anemia (10–11.9 g/dL), or moderate anemia (7–9.9 g/dL).<br /><br />Researchers compared emergency department (ED) visits, inpatient visits, total utilization, and all-cause mortality at 30 days, 6 months, and 1 year. Mean hemoglobin levels were 13.71 g/dL in non-anemic patients, 10.97 g/dL in mild anemia, and 8.67 g/dL in moderate anemia.<br /><br />Results showed that lower hemoglobin was associated with higher healthcare utilization, but the relationship was weak overall (R² = 0.01). Patients with anemia tended to have more inpatient visits, especially at 30 days and 1 year. ED visit differences were not statistically significant overall. Mild and moderate anemia were associated with slightly higher utilization across time points, with the clearest effect seen in inpatient care. Total healthcare use within 30 days was also notably higher in anemic groups.<br /><br />The study concludes that anemia, even in mild and moderate forms, may increase inpatient hospital needs and overall healthcare demand. Better anemia management could potentially reduce hospitalizations and resource use in high-risk patients.
