Northwell Health developed <strong>MyNora</strong>, a Microsoft Teams–based AI tool designed to improve communication during interdisciplinary rounds (IDRs) by extracting key summary information from the electronic medical record. The tool was introduced in November 2021 across <strong>8 inpatient IDRs</strong> at two tertiary academic medical centers.

MyNora supports computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) by bringing together active diagnoses, vital signs, medications, lab and radiology results, pending tests, daily progress notes, and updated consultant recommendations in one interface. This allowed care teams to quickly understand each patient’s plan of care without navigating multiple EMR sections, helping them focus on setting an <strong>expected date of discharge (EDD)</strong> early, with the goal of having every patient’s EDD entered by hospital day 2.

During the year-long pilot, the team monitored <strong>excess days</strong> and discharge barriers over a 6-month period. If a patient did not meet the expected discharge date, staff selected one of seven predefined reasons in the application to capture barriers in real time. The results showed that about half of patients were discharged on or before the expected date, while the rest experienced delays. Importantly, after MyNora was implemented, <strong>excess days declined sharply</strong> on medical units, suggesting improved throughput and workflow efficiency.

Future plans include pre- and post-implementation user satisfaction surveys, deeper analysis of the most common discharge barriers contributing to long lengths of stay, and expansion of MyNora to other departments such as radiology and consulting services.
