Clinical Correlation Required: A Radiology Curriculum for Internist Trainees

Pdf Summary
This poster describes a novel radiology curriculum created for first-year internal medicine residents (PGY1) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to improve basic radiology knowledge and confidence in image interpretation. The need for the curriculum stemmed from the lack of a comprehensive radiology teaching program for internal medicine trainees and from evidence that internists increasingly consult radiologists less often.

The intervention, titled “Air, Water, Earth, Fire: Essential Radiology for the General Internist,” was delivered from August to November 2019 and consisted of four 50-minute, case-based lectures covering x-ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI. The curriculum emphasized core physics and principles for each imaging modality, used clinically relevant cases based on American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria, and encouraged active learning through think-pair-share discussion. The goal was to promote inductive reasoning rather than memorization of specific images.

Knowledge was assessed using pre- and post-tests. Matched results showed improvement across all four modalities, with statistically significant gains in x-ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI scores. The largest improvement was seen in x-ray interpretation, while ultrasound showed a smaller but still significant increase.

The authors conclude that this curriculum improved PGY1 residents’ understanding of basic radiologic principles and may offer a memorable framework that supports long-term retention. The program is presented as a “by internists, for internists” educational approach designed to better prepare internal medicine trainees for clinical practice.
