This abstract describes the first characterization of hospitalizations using the new ICD-10-CM code for non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA), which became available in FY 2022 as M45.A*. Because nr-axSpA historically lacked a distinct code, it was difficult to identify separately from ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and other inflammatory spondylopathies in administrative data.<br /><br />Using the Vizient Clinical Data Base, investigators identified inpatient admissions coded for nr-axSpA, other specified inflammatory spondylopathies (M46.8*), and AS (M45* excluding M45.A) across fiscal years 2020–2022. Only 26 inpatient admissions with nr-axSpA were found, compared with 1,192 admissions for other specified inflammatory spondylopathies and 25,102 admissions for AS.<br /><br />The nr-axSpA cohort differed from the comparison groups. Patients were more often female (69.2%) than those with other specified inflammatory spondylopathies (52.0%) or AS (37.0%). The nr-axSpA group also had a higher proportion of non-Hispanic Black patients (15.4%) and a lower proportion of non-Hispanic White patients (65.4%) than the other cohorts. Patients with nr-axSpA were younger on average (52.2 years) than patients in the other group (66.0 years) and AS group (61.2 years), and they had fewer Medicare beneficiaries (26.9%). Length of stay was shorter for nr-axSpA hospitalizations (4.8 days) than for other specified inflammatory spondylopathies (6.3 days) and AS (7.0 days).<br /><br />Overall, the study suggests that the new nr-axSpA code can improve research by allowing more precise identification of this population, which appears to have distinct demographic and utilization patterns. More widespread coding and additional data will be needed to support larger-scale research.
