Northwell Health is New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer, focused on improving community health through high-quality clinical care, education, research, and health promotion, regardless of ability to pay. It operates 23 hospitals and over 700 outpatient facilities, with more than 13,600 affiliated physicians.<br /><br />The document describes the design and early implementation of an 18-month Hospital Medicine Leadership Development Program (HLDP) created by Northwell’s Division of Hospital Medicine. The program responds to a need for formal leadership training among hospitalists, many of whom already lead quality improvement, education, and operations initiatives but have not received structured leadership development.<br /><br />The program was launched in 2021 for 12 selected hospitalists from two academic medical centers. It was built “for hospitalists, by hospitalists” and included input from a pre-program survey to identify desired topics and curriculum elements. Key features include:<br />- Leadership lectures chosen by participants<br />- Sessions led by internal and external hospital medicine leaders<br />- Capstone projects tailored to each participant’s interests<br />- Formal and informal networking opportunities with health system leaders<br />- Two mentors per participant: one internal to support project work and one external for broader career guidance<br />- Emotional intelligence self-assessments at the start and end of the program<br /><br />The program aims to increase engagement, develop future hospital medicine leaders, improve visibility with executive leadership, and support recruitment and retention. Early feedback from participants has been very positive, and the program has already helped build interdisciplinary mentorship and stronger ties with site leaders. The team plans to continue evaluating outcomes, host capstone presentations, and expand the program for future cohorts.
