Building a Thriving Academic Hospitalist Workforce: A Rapid Qualitative Analysis to Identify Key Areas of Focus in the Field
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document reports a rapid qualitative study on the future needs of academic hospitalist workforces, prompted by increased clinical, administrative, and research demands during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors conducted five virtual focus groups with 23 hospitalists from 17 institutions to identify current concerns and prioritize areas that will help build a thriving workforce.

Using templated summaries and matrix-based thematic analysis, the study found five major areas of focus:

1. Burnout recognition and support for hospitalist wellness
2. Maintaining an adequate workforce through retention, pipeline development, and staffing models
3. Clarifying scope of work as hospitalist roles and clinical skills expand
4. Preserving the academic mission despite growing clinical demands
5. Bridging gaps between hospitalist group needs and hospital expectations

The results suggest that many of these issues are interconnected and influence overall well-being and job sustainability. The authors conclude that addressing these priorities will require coordinated action from both hospitals and hospitalist groups to support workforce health, growth, and long-term academic success.
