Building Interprofessional Education Into the Clinical Learning Environment

Pdf Summary
A novel interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum was developed for 49 first-year internal medicine residents to improve understanding of five healthcare professions—nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and speech-language pathology—and strengthen teamwork in the inpatient setting. Because many graduate medical education programs lack formal IPE training, the program was designed to fit into the clinical learning environment during ambulatory “Y week” in March 2022.

The 2-day experience combined experiential learning and peer teaching. Each intern shadowed one of the five professions for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, completed a worksheet about the role observed, and then participated in a faculty-facilitated group report-out the following day.

Participation was very high: 98% attended the shadowing experience, 100% attended the report-out session, and all residents completed a retrospective pre-post assessment. Results showed substantial gains in self-reported knowledge of each profession’s role and responsibilities, with Likert scores increasing across all five groups. Residents also reported improved skills and attitudes, including better ability to work on interprofessional teams, communicate with non-physician team members, value their contributions, and recognize how knowledge of these roles improved their own physician performance.

The authors conclude that this highly generalizable IPE model can be effectively integrated into clinical training. By building on already strong appreciation for teamwork, the curriculum enhanced residents’ understanding of team roles, communication, and collaborative practice, with potential benefits for provider satisfaction, teamwork, and patient outcomes.
