Be Prepared: Implementation of a Novel Telemedicine Based Covid/Pandemic Preparedness Curriculum
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes a novel inpatient telemedicine-based COVID-19 support curriculum created to help address physician shortages and high patient volumes during the pandemic. The program was designed as a voluntary, one-week rotation initially for residents in quarantine who were asymptomatic, and later expanded to all residents based on team needs and rotator availability.

The curriculum aimed to give participants a knowledge base for COVID care and broader pandemic preparedness. It used a 1:1 model pairing each rotator with an attending hospitalist. Responsibilities were divided so that rotators worked off-site via telemedicine—taking histories, doing daily assessments, communicating with consultants, writing notes, placing orders, assisting with family discussions, and providing patient education—while attendings remained on-site to verify histories, perform physical exams, co-sign documentation, and provide teaching.

Two cycles of the curriculum were completed. The first, in late summer 2020, involved one rotator and received positive feedback. The second, in late summer 2021, included 24 rotators over four weeks, with feedback collected from all participants. Positive themes included the telemedicine format, initial orientation, morning huddles, shared responsibility, and camaraderie. Areas for improvement included reducing frequent turnover, lengthening rotations, standardizing expectations, improving COVID background knowledge, enhancing telemedicine delivery, and creating more educational opportunities.

The authors conclude that the program successfully helped mobilize physicians during COVID surges and that the lessons learned can inform future pandemic response and preparedness curricula.
