Attitudes Towards Video-Module Education in Patients With Copd or Asthma
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This poster examined attitudes toward video-module education (VME) among hospitalized adults, including patients with COPD or asthma. Because inhaler misuse is common and worsens outcomes, the authors explored whether VME could be a useful educational tool, especially given concerns about low eHealth literacy in hospitalized patients.

Adult inpatients on general medicine wards completed a technology interview assessing device ownership, internet use, eHealth literacy, and willingness to use VME. The sample was largely Black and female, and about 29% had obstructive lung disease. Most participants had positive attitudes toward VME: most were at least somewhat likely to use it after discharge, though about one in five said they were very unlikely to use it.

Key findings showed that technology access mattered. Patients without any technological device were much less likely to say they would use VME than those who owned at least one device. Similarly, patients who never used the internet were less likely to be interested in VME than regular internet users. In contrast, demographic factors and prior residence were not associated with attitudes toward VME. Most participants also had adequate eHealth literacy, and average eHealth literacy did not differ significantly between those with and without obstructive lung disease.

The authors conclude that VME may be well received by hospitalized patients with obstructive lung disease, particularly those who already have access to technology and the internet. Expanding technology access and internet availability could further increase interest and use. However, the findings are limited to English-speaking hospitalized patients and may not generalize to all patients with obstructive lung disease.
