Pdf Summary
This study examined whether county-level eviction rates are associated with all-cause mortality in the United States. Using 2016 data from Eviction Lab, the American Community Survey, CDC BRFSS, and CDC WONDER, the authors analyzed 686 counties and compared eviction rates with age-adjusted death rates per 100,000 people.

Counties were grouped into low, intermediate, and high eviction categories. Higher-eviction counties tended to be larger, more urban, have more renter households, and have a higher proportion of Black residents and women. They also showed somewhat higher rates of several chronic conditions.

In fully adjusted hierarchical linear mixed models, eviction rate was independently associated with mortality. Specifically, each 1% increase in eviction rate was linked to an additional 9.3 deaths per 100,000 people. When eviction was analyzed by tertile, the highest-eviction counties had markedly higher mortality than the lowest-eviction counties. Geographically weighted regression confirmed a similar pattern.

Subgroup analyses suggested the association was stronger in counties with higher proportions of Black residents and higher proportions of women. This finding points to eviction as a potentially important driver of health disparities.

Overall, the study suggests that eviction is not just a housing issue but also a public health issue. Policies that expand affordable housing and reduce the harms of housing instability may help improve population health and reduce inequities.
