Analyzing the Use of Interpretation Services for Patients With Limited English Proficiency During Covid 19 Pandemic
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study examined how health care professionals experienced and perceived interpreter services for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the pandemic restricted patient interaction and altered communication workflows, the authors wanted to identify barriers to using interpretation services and understand their impact on care.

A survey using Likert-scale and open-ended questions was distributed to health care professionals at an academic safety-net hospital in Austin, Texas. A total of 107 respondents completed the survey between August and November 2021.

Overall, the findings suggest that interpretation services were recognized as important and beneficial, but their use was affected by pandemic-related disruptions and system-level barriers. Respondents reported both perceived strengths and failures in the interpretation process, as well as concerns about how well these services supported quality care. The study also collected qualitative feedback on possible improvements, including system changes needed to make interpretation more reliable and accessible.

The results highlight that underuse of professional interpretation services remains a problem, especially during times of crisis. The authors conclude that improving access to interpretation services is essential for equitable care for LEP patients, and that hospitals should address barriers that limit their consistent use.
