An Interprofessional Education Workshop for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes an interprofessional education (IPE) workshop on quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) for medical, nursing, physician assistant (PA), and pharmacy students. The workshop aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of QI/PS concepts while helping them learn how to work across disciplines, which is essential for safe, high-quality patient care.

Before the workshop, students completed an Institute for Healthcare Improvement module (“QI 102: How to Improve with the Model for Improvement”). They then participated in a 2-hour interactive Zoom workshop that combined didactic teaching and small-group activities. Afterward, students completed a survey rating the workshop and offering qualitative feedback. Survey results were analyzed using ANOVA to compare mean ratings across disciplines.

Overall, nursing and pharmacy students rated the workshop more favorably than medical and PA students. Specifically, 93% of nursing students and 80% of pharmacy students rated the workshop as “very good” or “excellent,” compared with 68% of medical students and 63% of PA students.

Qualitative feedback showed that students valued different aspects of the session. Strengths included interdisciplinary collaboration, interactivity, and real-world clinical application. Nursing and medical students especially appreciated talking with peers from other professions, while pharmacy students found the patient case useful and relevant.

Negative feedback revealed several themes. Medical students often felt the material was repetitive, noting that QI content overlapped with existing coursework and clinical experiences. PA and pharmacy students mentioned low participation or poor engagement in small groups. Some students also reported technical difficulties with Zoom tools, especially the whiteboard function.

The authors conclude that learner satisfaction differed by discipline and that future workshops should account for students’ baseline QI/PS knowledge. They recommend revising the IPE workshop based on student feedback to improve engagement and reduce redundancy.
