An Innovative Hospitalist Track for Internal Medicine Residents
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This article describes an Internal Medicine Residency Hospitalist Track created at Cooper University Hospital to better prepare residents for careers in hospital medicine. The authors note that while residency offers strong inpatient clinical training, it often lacks structured exposure to the non-clinical aspects of being a hospitalist, such as leadership, education, informatics, and quality improvement. Existing hospitalist tracks have been developed at other programs, but published outcomes are limited.

The track was designed to provide mentorship, career exposure, and practical guidance for residents interested in hospital medicine. It includes opportunities to work closely with faculty hospitalists, learn about diverse career paths, and build professional relationships. Residents on the Junior Hospitalist Elective work one-on-one with a junior faculty member on a direct care team, gaining autonomy and near-peer mentorship. PGY-3 residents participate in a “mega-team” in the Observation Unit, which increases exposure to observation care and collaboration with an advanced practice provider. A dedicated didactic week features hour-long lectures from hospitalist institutional leaders and small-group discussions, allowing for more personal interaction. Residents also receive access to career resources such as sample CVs, cover letters, and interview questions.

Since 2021, the track has graduated six residents, five of whom became hospitalists, and three of those stayed at the institution. Thirteen residents are currently enrolled, with more expected to join next year. Overall, the program has received highly positive feedback for both its educational value and the mentorship relationships it fosters.
