A Tumor With an Embolic Twist: A Rare Case of Papillary Fibroelastoma Leading to Myocardial Infarction.
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes a rare case of papillary fibroelastoma, a benign cardiac tumor that can still cause serious complications through embolization. In this case, the tumor was located on the mitral valve and was believed to be the source of a myocardial infarction. Papillary fibroelastomas are uncommon but clinically important because fragments or associated clots can break off and travel through the bloodstream, causing heart attacks, strokes, or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). An echocardiogram is useful for detecting these tumors, but the definitive diagnosis is made by surgical pathology after removal. The main treatment for symptomatic papillary fibroelastoma is surgical resection. However, patients who are not good surgical candidates or who must wait for surgery remain at risk for clot formation and embolization. This case emphasizes the importance of starting anticoagulation promptly to help reduce the risk of future embolic events, including additional myocardial infarction or stroke. Overall, the report highlights that even a rare benign tumor can have dangerous cardiovascular consequences, and early recognition and treatment are essential.
