Back to course
Pdf Summary
This statewide survey explored the experiences, challenges, and priorities of 93 Wisconsin hospitalists. Most respondents were internal medicine trained, and over one-third had five or fewer years of experience. Despite workload pressures, 76% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their jobs.

The main challenges identified were excessive time spent on documentation and electronic medical records (43%), patient-related issues such as placement and prolonged stays (42%), frequent interruptions from pages and meetings (42%), burnout (32%), and peer-to-peer reviews or insurance denials (31%). The top educational need was evidence-based clinical updates (72%).

Free-text responses suggested that hospitalists want reduced administrative burden, better compensation, and improved staffing models. When asked what professional societies should prioritize, respondents most often selected advocacy (89%), followed by professional development and career advancement (69%), and continuing medical education or training (65%).

Overall, the study shows that Wisconsin hospitalists are generally satisfied with their work but face significant operational and professional challenges. Addressing these concerns will likely require coordinated efforts at the workplace, organizational, and professional society levels.
