A Hospital Medicine Coaching Consult Program to Facilitate Faculty Collaboration and Scholarship
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Hospital Medicine Division at The Ohio State University created a coaching consult program to improve faculty collaboration, scholarship, onboarding, and promotion. The need arose because the division grew rapidly from 62 to 135 partners in five years, mostly early-career faculty, while only a few senior faculty were available to mentor. Physical distance and COVID-19 further limited relationship-building.

The program uses short, goal-oriented, time-limited coaching interactions to connect faculty with experts across the division. New hires and current faculty can submit a request through a Qualtrics form describing their project or goals. A committee then matches them with an appropriate coach. Each coaching pair completes a preliminary partnership form to clarify expectations and ensure shared goals. A post-survey is sent six months later to evaluate the experience and track scholarly outcomes.

The program began in 2020 with 5 consult categories and expanded to 10 categories, including oral presentation, wellness, COVID-19 research, quality improvement, peer onboarding, clinical teaching, patient experience, medical informatics, and classroom teaching. In the first 18 months, the team coordinated 67 coaching consults.

Feedback has been very positive: 100% of post-survey respondents said the program improved their job satisfaction and/or morale, and all said they were likely or very likely to request another consult. Faculty described the support as “amazing” and said it helped them identify opportunities and think strategically about how to get involved.

The program’s future goals include creating group mentoring opportunities, measuring long-term effects on retention, scholarship, and promotion, incentivizing participation, and expanding the model to other divisions and departments.
