This project developed a short, targeted perioperative medicine curriculum for hospitalists at the Medical College of Wisconsin to improve familiarity with key perioperative topics. The curriculum consisted of a 30-minute self-directed PowerPoint presentation with high-yield points across 20 topics. Faculty spent an average of 179 minutes completing the material.<br /><br />The project was designed because hospital medicine and perioperative medicine were separate sections, and hospitalists had limited exposure to perioperative patients since perioperative medicine faculty handled most consults and co-management. The goal was to provide hospitalists with practical perioperative knowledge that could improve patient outcomes and hospital efficiency.<br /><br />A pilot study was conducted from July to October 2021. Of 68 faculty members who received the curriculum, 13 completed the presentation and both pre- and post-tests. Participants rated the quality of the topics and presentation highly, with an average score of 4.7 out of 5. Knowledge was self-rated on a 5-point Likert scale and improved from an average pre-test score of 3.2 to a post-test score of 4.0, which was statistically significant (p = 0.001).<br /><br />The authors concluded that a brief PowerPoint-based curriculum containing targeted perioperative key points appeared to improve hospitalists’ knowledge base in this pilot project. They suggested that a larger study sample would likely produce more robust and significant results.
