A Cross-Sectional Study on the Research Performance Trends of General Medicine in Japan
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This cross-sectional study examined research output trends among Japanese general medicine physicians from 2015 to 2020. The authors searched PubMed-indexed international journals using keywords related to Japan, general medicine, family medicine, general internal medicine, and hospital medicine. Eligible papers were formal academic articles authored by Japanese general medicine physicians. Articles were then classified into categories such as clinical research, medical and clinical education, public health and epidemiology, health services, health care quality and safety, and experimental basic medicine.

The main finding was that the number of publications by Japanese general medicine physicians increased markedly over the six-year period, rising to about 2.5 times the earlier level. However, the research pattern differed from trends seen in other countries: a relatively large proportion of the published work focused on basic experimental medicine rather than on the more common clinical, educational, or public health topics.

The authors conclude that while publication activity in Japanese general medicine is growing, the field still needs stronger development as an academic discipline. They argue that promoting general medicine as an established academic area is important for strengthening its recognition within research institutions, including university hospitals. They suggest that future efforts should encourage general medicine physicians in Japan to engage more in research that advances general medicine itself.
