A Community-Based Online Resident as Teacher Elective
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes a community-based online “Resident as Teacher” (RAT) elective designed to address residents’ teaching needs. A needs assessment found that residents often felt unprepared to teach, lacked confidence in creating teaching talks, and had no formal training in teaching.

The curriculum had three main objectives:
1) develop resident teaching skills,
2) identify ways teaching can fit into daily workflow, and
3) help residents design a chalk talk for third-year medical students using effective large-group teaching principles.

The authors hypothesized that the RAT curriculum would increase resident confidence in teaching medical students and in developing chalk talks by 20% on a 1–5 Likert scale. The elective was implemented as a two-week online curriculum.

Results showed improved self-perceived teaching skills after the curriculum. Posttest responses demonstrated increased confidence in teaching, greater ability to find tools and resources to improve teaching, and higher confidence in creating chalk talks. These improvements were statistically significant across measures, with p values of 0.001.

The conclusion is that an online Resident as Teacher curriculum can improve residents’ confidence and perceived teaching ability. Future work may further refine and expand the curriculum to strengthen resident teaching development.
