A Case of Bupropion-Amantadine Neurotoxicity
A Case of Bupropion-Amantadine Neurotoxicity
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This poster describes the importance of careful medication reconciliation and drug interaction review in hospitalized patients, especially older adults with cognitive impairment who are vulnerable to polypharmacy-related adverse effects.

It presents a case of suspected neurotoxicity from the combination of bupropion and amantadine. Both medications are commonly used in older patients: bupropion for depression or smoking cessation, and amantadine for dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. Each drug has its own side effects, including anxiety, tachycardia, gastrointestinal symptoms, agitation, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, and falls. Bupropion can also lower the seizure threshold.

The key message is that when these medications are used together, they may produce adverse effects not typically seen with either drug alone. The poster emphasizes that clinicians should review for potential drug-drug interactions whenever starting a new medication or evaluating new neurologic or behavioral symptoms. Early recognition of medication-induced neurotoxicity can help prevent avoidable harm in a high-risk patient population.

Overall, the poster highlights medication safety, especially in elderly patients with complex medication regimens, and underscores the value of close monitoring for combined neurotoxic effects.
