Video Summary
SHM’s practice management webinar focused on burnout and well-being in hospital medicine, especially how COVID-19 worsened already high clinician stress. Leaders from the SHM Wellbeing Task Force introduced a practical Well-Being Toolkit designed by hospitalists for hospitalists to support well-being at the individual, team, and organizational levels.

A central framework was the “RISE” mnemonic: Recharge, Introspect, Seek help, and Express gratitude. Panelists explained how these practices can help clinicians restore energy, reflect on what matters, ask for support, and build positive habits. The webinar also highlighted three personas in the toolkit: the frontline hospitalist, the hospitalist leader, and the well-being leader. Each persona includes actionable strategies, such as gratitude practices, structured check-ins, listening sessions, measuring burnout, starting a well-being council, and role-modeling healthy boundaries.

The panel emphasized that while systemic problems like scheduling, workflow, and staffing drive burnout, individuals can still take meaningful action. They shared personal well-being habits, answered audience questions, and encouraged participants to adapt the toolkit to their own setting. The session closed by inviting continued discussion at SHM Converge and beyond.
