Pdf Summary
The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, effective June 27, 2023, mandates that all DEA-registered clinicians who prescribe controlled substances complete eight hours of education on pain management and the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) and substance use disorder (SUD) before their next DEA registration or renewal. This is a one-time requirement.

The training must cover prevention, recognition, and care of patients with substance use disorders, including those with co-occurring pain or psychiatric conditions. There is flexibility regarding course content, as long as it addresses OUD or SUD. Eligible courses can be offered by organizations accredited by the ACCME, CCEPR, state medical societies, or the American Osteopathic Association. The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) provides qualifying courses free to its members and plans to add more.

Completed training related to addiction or pain management prior to the law's enactment counts toward the requirement. Those who are board-certified in addiction medicine/psychiatry or who graduated within the last five years from certain health professional schools with comprehensive curricula including at least eight hours on OUD and SUD training are deemed compliant. Additionally, clinicians who completed the buprenorphine X-Waiver training previously have fulfilled the requirement.

The eight hours of training can be accumulated through multiple educational activities, including courses, online materials, and enduring content. When renewing DEA registration, clinicians must attest to completion; no documentation is required at that time, but practitioners should keep certificates as proof.

In summary, this new DEA mandate ensures clinicians prescribing controlled substances have updated training on managing opioid and substance use disorders, enhancing patient care amid the ongoing opioid crisis.
